 | The breakdown Gray Blocks In, Photoreal Muscle Car Out The same frame twice. We blocked out a city alley and a camera move in Nuke's 3D system, rendered the orbit, and ran an AI pass over it. This is what we are building: VFX Engine's generative tools running natively inside the Nuke node graph. The shot is on LinkedIn. |

The brute-force era of dense Gaussian splatting is ending. A new framework captures up-to-scale, production-ready 3D environments with a fraction of the usual point-cloud density by locking splats directly to hardware-synchronized LiDAR. If your set reconstructions still hog VRAM, your workflow just became unnecessarily heavy. |
This week: a LiDAR-to-splat pipeline that skips densification, Wētā FX breaks down Stranger Things 5, iClone goes free, and West Bengal puts Rs 50 crore behind AVGC-XR training. |

Set Scans Without the Bloat: Splats Anchored Straight to LiDAR |
Researchers have developed Structured-Li-GS, a lightweight Gaussian splatting framework that skips standard densification entirely. Using a hardware-synchronized handheld scanner, it anchors each splat to colorized LiDAR point clouds and initializes its shape from local surface geometry, producing up-to-scale reconstructions with far smaller model sizes. This matters for on-set capture and virtual art departments. Splatting has meant GPU-heavy optimization that bloats files and VRAM on stage. Anchoring splats to LiDAR geometry instead gives layout and matchmove teams fast, true-to-scale set reconstructions straight from raw scanner data. Read the full breakdown on arXiv → |

Studio News · AnimationXpress PowerKids Moves Beyond Service Work with Original Global Animation IP Indian animation outfit PowerKids Entertainment is pivoting from low-cost service work to launching original, self-owned global franchises. The studio is leveraging international markets like Annecy to back projects like Adventures of Akira and Mowgli and The Blue Boy Chronicles, which are designed for global distribution, licensing, and consumer product ecosystems. If your studio's business model relies solely on Western outsourcing contracts, this aggressive shift to IP ownership represents the new blueprint for regional growth. |
Policy · AnimationXpress West Bengal Puts Rs 50 Crore Behind AVGC-XR Skills Training The state government has committed Rs 50 crore to skills training across animation, VFX, gaming, and XR, aiming to reach roughly one lakh students and young professionals a year, with 500 content creator labs planned for 2026 and a revamped Webel animation academy. Closing thought The thread this week is leverage. A splat pipeline that anchors to LiDAR instead of brute-forcing density, a pro animation tool that now costs nothing to learn, and a state funding training seats at scale. Access keeps getting cheaper; judgment is still earned. And if your demo reel is live on VFX Engine, next week's featured slot could be yours. |
