VFX Engine Weekly |
One of the most bankable genre directors alive just shipped a film with no camera, no set, and no render farm. It split the industry overnight, and the questions it forces about craft and credit are now everyone’s. |
This week: Blomkamp goes fully AI, free MetaHuman rigs land in Blender, a silent short takes Best Animation, and your city rebuilt as a film-stage miniature. |

Blomkamp Just Released a Fully AI 13-Minute Film, and He Says a Feature Is Next |
NIGHTBORNE is a 13-minute sci-fi horror short set in Peter Watts' Echopraxia, published July 19 on Blomkamp's new Barley Studios channel. Every frame came out of Seedance 2.0, directed through prompts rather than a camera. The humans did not disappear: concept artists designed the world first, and 32 real people lent their faces and voices. Barley is built to make AI films the way his Oats Studios made traditional ones. The response was immediate and divided. Detractors catalogued the tells frame by frame, drifting props, inconsistent injuries, uncanny line reads, and called for a practical District 10 instead; others countered that the staging and shot grammar still read as unmistakably Blomkamp. Blomkamp has said a narrative feature made this way is what comes next. ▶ Watch NIGHTBORNE on YouTube |

If you look-dev hard-surface assets, it swaps hand-tuned shaders for physical values from research data. |

Closing thought This week the gap between enterprise budgets and a good desktop closed three times: a District 9 director shipped a prompt-directed film, Epic opened RigLogic to make Blender a real MetaHuman workspace, and one artist packaged measured metal physics into a free node network. The expensive part keeps commoditizing, and judgment is what still separates the work. Browse the open roles at vfxengine.com/jobs. |
