Barnstorm Shows How Spider-Noir Was Built

Barnstorm VFX has published a two-minute breakdown reel from Spider-Noir, the Prime Video series that drops an ageing private investigator into 1930s New York. The show ships in two graded versions, Authentic Black & White and True-Hue Full Color, so its vendors delivered shots twice over: three kinds of deliverable in all, by befores & afters' count.

The Take: Two grades is not a colour decision taken in the DI, it is a comp decision taken in every shot. The blacks, edges and grain that hold up in monochrome are not the ones that hold up in colour. Two minutes of split screens will show you which way they went.

Star Wars VFX Workers Vote to Join IATSE
US visual effects workers engaged directly by Lucasfilm's franchise productions have voted to join IATSE and will negotiate a first contract. Supporters read it as VFX finally reaching for protections adjacent crafts have held for decades. A first contract can take years, and it covers workers engaged directly, not the vendor pipeline where most VFX work sits.Photo: Tim-desser, CC0

Avatar Aang Built Toph's Arena in Blender Before Anyone Drew It
Environment artist Connor Sheehan says Toph's introduction arena was fully modeled in Blender before animation received it, letting the storyboard artist draft cameras inside a real volume. For 2D, the 3D block-out is now where the camera gets decided.

Closing thought

Barnstorm's reel is a studio choosing to show its work. Two other stories are about who decides. A bargaining unit at Lucasfilm will work out what a first VFX contract looks like, while layout artists on a 2D feature settled the camera in Blender before anyone drew a frame. The tools keep pulling decisions earlier. The terms are a separate negotiation.
