VFX Engine Weekly

A24's adaptation of Backrooms recently proved that the most surreal visual effects require physical solutions rather than purely digital ones. By constructing adjacent sets and using witness cameras, the production bypassed standard CG clipping issues to create uncanny physical realism. This shift challenges our reliance on post-production fixes and marks a return to hybrid craft.

This week: how Mr. Wolf VFX built the uncanny no-clipping shots for A24's Backrooms, KitBash buying ArtStation and Sketchfab from Epic, and Spider-Man's record-breaking theatrical run in India.

Seamless No-Clipping in A24's Backrooms Required Practical Set Offsets and Digital Projections

For A24's big-screen adaptation of the viral YouTube series Backrooms, production visual effects supervisor Edward J. Douglas and Mr. Wolf VFX had to solve the physical puzzle of "no-clipping" characters through solid walls. Instead of relying entirely on digital environments, the production built the Backrooms and basement sets adjacent to each other so actors could walk freely between them. The team then utilized witness cameras to capture precise actor positions, allowing artists to reanimate digital doubles, project shadows onto the re-placed walls, and blend the elements.

This hybrid approach demonstrates that the most convincing surrealism is anchored in physical truth. By prioritizing practical spatial relationships on set rather than deferring the entire problem to post-production, the VFX team retained realistic interactive lighting and natural actor movement. For pipelines tackling surreal or impossible physical interactions, the takeaway is clear: physical set construction paired with precise camera tracking beats pure digital recreation every time.

"The core of this effect was literally two CG objects sliding through each other. There's nowhere to hide." Edward J. Douglas, production visual effects supervisor.

Character Creator and iClone Pipelines Accelerate Indie Character Workflows
Reallusion details how independent developers are using Character Creator 5 and iClone 8 to bypass character modelling and rigging costs. Dragon Level Studio put roughly seven months of saved development time on the record and sidestepped a near-$10,000 outsourcing bill, while Rendeo cites a 5-10x speedup on character production. If you are scaling characters without a dedicated art department, that is where the time goes.

Closing thought

This week reveals a clear convergence: whether through practical on-set solutions for complex VFX, character pipeline tooling, or targeted educational initiatives, the industry is finding ways to optimize complex workflows. To stay competitive, focus on hybrid techniques that bridge physical sets and digital tools.
